All the so-called public places of Southern California rely on the same principle. Shopping centers, university campuses, office parks, airports, museums, gated communities… are all
- access-controled,
- privately built,
- and not depending on the outside world.
They create their own public space, inside themselves, out of nothing, the way theme parks do.
As they are autonomous and self contained, these public spaces have to be connected to each other through the urba networks. They rely on them.
All together these environments create a consistent networked urban system.
