Walt Disney hated
Los Angeles, that is why he created a world which urban characteristics
are exactly the opposite. In Los Angeles, there are almost no open public spaces like squares, market places, promenades… But Disneyland is full of these places, and provides Los Angeles with what it lacks. In Disneyland, every element of the real world is reinvented, " disneyified ". - transportation networks, shops, accomodation, restaurants, administration, police, fire station, etc. One hangs around in monorail, shops in a cartoon-like city, lives in themed hotels etc. Disneyland is opposite and complementary to LA : that is why the architecture critic Paul Golberger described Disneyland as " the townsquare of Los Angeles ". |
