Gated communities are not an eccentricity reserved to the elite. More and more people are willing to live in such environments.
If they appeal to so many people, it's because they correspond to a new idea of the city. They fit with the way contemporary urban territories are used, and they have to be understood in the context of the huge sprawling megapolis of the automobile area.
Their context is definitely not the traditional city which we often refer to in Europe, and we cannot understand them from our point of view. Gated communities take place easily within the american idea of the city. If we want to understand them, we have to start from Southern california.
