Gated communities embody a way of living in urban areas which is completely opposed to the ideal of the open and mixed city, in which public spaces are shared by all. They question the idea of public space.

In Europe, the people who live close to such developments explicitly reject them, reproach their inhabitants to withdraw from society, and often compare gated communities to golden ghettos or enclaves.
Even though gated communities are more common in North and South America, negative reactions are more rare in these countries.
On the contrary, they seem to be considered an attractive option, even for those who live outside of the gates.
An enquiry conducted in England and reported by Sarah Blandy and Diane Lister concluded that the people most likely to be in favour of gated communities were the younger and lower-income respondents ; and not, as one might have expected, the higher-income, older ones.
Even if, for the moment, most of their inhabitants are from the upper classes, there is a potential to develop a wide variety of gated communities for all income and ethnic groups.
